Nursery Tour

At Stepping Stones we do things slightly different, we believe that nurturing relationships amongst the children is paramount and allowing them the time to blossom and develop within one base room with their peers and consistent carers is more beneficial to their emotional needs.

Children are based in their rooms according to their age, this allows children to form strong bonds with their peer groups and therefore eases transition to the next room as an established friendship group. This works much the same way as school year groups, for example our pre-school key groups only consist of children who are leaving for school that academic year, this allows us to tailor our early years curriculum in a more focused manner.

Our main transition period is at the start of the school year September, however all children are individuals and therefore if we feel there is a need to transition them to another room at any point throughout the year, then this will be a discussed over a period of time and agreed by both parties, as our main mission is to ensure every individual child reaches their full unique potential.

Baby room

Baby room

The baby room is a large room with lots of natural stimulating resources to develop children’s learning and to support their development needs. We look after children from 6 weeks to 2 years in the baby room. The team in this room has developed the baby room to ensure it meets all their children’s needs i.e resources low level and accessible to babies. We have our own access to the outdoor facilities; this area is decked so it provides a safe place for babies to play when they are enjoying the outdoor environment.

We also have access to the sensory room which the babies love to explore. The sensory room has been created to give children opportunities to explore their senses. All resources are at low level so children can freely access what resources they choose to play with. This room is used by all ages for small group time & one to one time to support SEN

Tiddler room

The tiddler room is the base room for our 2-3 years old’s. The room provides a wide variety of activities and natural every day resources in the daily provision for children to explore and begin to learn skills for life. We encourage free flow to help develop personal social & emotional skills (PSE) as during this age this area of development is key. Children learn to become independant, learn about self care and build on their confidence. Routine is also key throughout the day, to ensure boundaries are established during this stage of development. Strong bonds are built between the key person and the child, enabling them to teach children through their specific targets or assessment needs. Activities are geared towards the children’s needs and the early year’s foundation stage (EYFS) through staff interaction and support to enhance children’s learning and development. We encourage children to have a go at activities that they may not be familiar with. We encourage exploration and critical thinking as this is how children learn best. Tiddler room has its own access to the great outdoor area; children have access to outdoors throughout the day as this helps them make choices. We support potty training and self help skills with children who are ready for this transition

Pre-school room

The pre-school group consists of children aged between 3-5 years old. There are 2 rooms within pre-school in order to focus in on the specific age group. We have a younger group of 3-4yr old and an older group of children who are due to leave for school the following September. At times children will have access to the entire 1st floor during free-flow play, this is where children can access two rooms which both provide structured play and free play. Children have stimulating resources both open ended and specific resources to help them achieve their outcomes. Pre-school is where children will learn to become more independent and get ready for the next transition in their life which will be school. We have built great partnerships with primary schools to ensure this transition is as smooth as possible, during the Summer term we encourage teacher visits.

We have a graduation ceremony which we say farewell and good luck to all children who will be leaving to go on to school. Pre-school room provides children with choices and self help skills. The children do have a structured routine which gives them a balance of adult led and child led activities.

Outdoor Area

Children are given the opportunity to go outdoors twice a day to ensure children can access more space and different environments. The aim of both indoor and outdoor play is to provide a safe stimulating environment for children to play, learn and develop.

We have a separate outdoor decked area designated for babies, to ensure the safety of the younger children during outdoor play.We also take children on regular walks around the local area (with consent)
